A series of animations from ED-16
![]() |
These are animations of my EarthDial, ED-16. For any day, it starts., before dawn and runs at 15 minute intervals until it is dark. You will see the shadow of ED-16's ball gnomon run from left to right, marking the dial's hour lines and, depending on the month of the year, you will also see that the gnomon's shadow marks where the six day curves indicate the season of the year. | ||||||||

As an example, the images shows that the dial
tells us that it is 4.45 p.m local solar time and that, as the gnomon's
shadow is in the lowest day curve, then the date will be around the 17th
to the 30th June. . You will see that the two circular mirrors at the top of the dial reflect the sky and change from blue (no clouds) through to white and shades of grey, depending as the weather. Similarly, the shadow of the gnomon is sharp and black when the sun shines and the sky is clear. Often, however, even in the summer in England, it is cloudy and there is no shadows. |
