CULROSS

A fine example of an old Scottish burgh in West Fife, situated on the River Forth, west of Dunfermline, it was created a Royal Burgh in 1588.The local landowner was merchant Sir George Bruce who ensured a thriving community with trade and industry.

Highlights include the 1597 Palace, once the landowner's hall and dwelling, and the 1626 Town House, as are most of the original streets, restored by the National Trust for Scotland

Near to the National Trust for Scotland office in Culross is a cottage which has a plain vertical sundial between two windows on the first storey.

The sundial may be of the same date as the house, which is dated to the seventeenth century.

The cottage's wall is facing south-south-west and you can see that the gnomon directed towards the south. The sundial's hour lines are very faint but you can see the figures XI,XII I,II and III.
