A Roman Sundial

A few years ago, I went on holiday to Cyprus , during which we visited Paleapaphos, an interesting site which was the centre of the Aphrodite cult.

There was also the courtyard of a 13th-14th. century .Lusignan manor house, with various earlier remains of the Hellenistic and Roman eras, including one large carved stone, which, despite being upside-down and somewhat damaged, I recognized as a sundial, of the type called a "hemicyclium".

Down

I managed to right it and this is roughly how it should be. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day, most unusual for Cyprus.

I wrote to the Cyprus antiquities authorities with my photos and they confirmed that the sundial was indeed from the period when Cyprus was a province of the Roman empire between 58 BC and its decline in the 4th. century.

I understand that they have now put it on show in the museum that forms part of the Lusignan manor house.
