A vertical sundial , as the name implies, has its dial mounted vertically, usually on the wall of a building. in distinction to a horizontal dial which has its dial plate placed horizontally, either on the ground or on a pedestal.

The Millenium Sundial

This modern vertical sundial is situated over the south door of the church, with the Latin inscription:

ANNO DOMINI MM.
In the year of our Lord 2000
The gnomon indicates that the building is aligned approximately South-West. The hour numerals are Roman and since the vertical hourline is at "I", the dial is set for British Summer Time, one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time ( or Universal Time, (U.T.))
